MUSIC @ BCCS

BCCS is excited to announce a new el Sistema inspired music program under the direction of Tina Hadari. Thanks in part to a grant from the Leever Foundation, this program will be embedded in the school day and will provide daily music instruction for all BCCS students.

The mission of our music program is to develop the next generation of engaged citizens through rigorous music and arts education that fosters creative expression, self-efficacy, collaborative learning, and social responsibility.

Tina Lee Hadari, the new Director of Music, Arts, and Citizenship at the Brass City Charter School, is a violinist, educator, and Founder and former Executive Artistic Director of Music Haven, a nationally-awarded community-based arts organization that anchors a string quartet to the lowest-income neighborhoods of New Haven to provide tuition-free intensive musical instruction for 100 “at promise” youth. Before founding Music Haven, Tina toured internationally as a violinist in the Vinca Quartet, a prizewinner of the Fischoff and Plowman Chamber Music competitions.  A dedicated teaching artist, she has also served on the faculties of Apple Hill Chamber Music Center, Point Counterpoint Chamber Music, Opus 118, the Neighborhood Music School, and Boulder Suzuki Strings. Tina holds a B.M. from New England Conservatory, a B.A. from Tufts University, a Master’s degree from the Yale School of Music, and a Doctoral degree from the University of Colorado, where she was a part of the graduate quartet-in-residence under the mentorship of the Takacs Quartet. She currently serves on the board of MusAid and advises a variety of El Sistema-inspired organizations around the country.

The MAC (Music, Artistry, and Citizenship) program was received two substantial grant awards to support the music program at BCCS:

The Elisha Leavenworth Foundation has given $25,000 for the purchase of new string instruments. The SpreadMusicNow Foundation also awarded $25,000 to MAC for instruments as well as to support an intern for the program.

We are deeply grateful for these awards that go a long way in making our outstanding music program possible.
